Health · HSA limits

An HSA contribution limit calculator that flags Medicare timing

The visitor picks self-only or family HDHP coverage, enters their age, what has already gone in this year and the months left. You receive their maximum, the remaining room and the monthly amount to reach it.

An HSA contribution limit calculator works out how much more someone can put into a Health Savings Account this year, using the IRS base limit for their coverage tier, the age-55 catch-up and what they and their employer have already contributed. Agencies embed it because the age and coverage inputs flag Medicare-timing and family-coverage conversations early.

What the inputs tell you before the call

InputsWhat it tells your producer
Your AgeThe key Medicare signal. Prospects in their early-to-mid sixties need to know contributions stop once they enroll in any part of Medicare, which is a timing conversation you can lead.
HDHP CoverageSelf-only or family tells you household structure and whether a spouse or dependants are on the plan, which matters for any health or life follow-up.
Already Contributed This YearShows engagement and the risk of an excess contribution if employer deposits were left out.
Months Left to ContributeReveals urgency. Few months left near year-end or the filing deadline means a prospect acting now.

Your first call

How should an agent open a call from an HSA limit lead?

These visitors came for a precise number, so keep the opener precise and helpful. Point to the question their age or coverage raises and offer to coordinate the coverage side; leave tax conclusions to their tax professional.

  1. 01"You entered an age of sixty-four. Are you planning to keep working past sixty-five, or enroll in Medicare when you're first eligible? It affects whether you can keep contributing."
  2. 02"You're on family HDHP coverage. With open enrollment coming, would it help to compare your plan against the other options with your actual costs?"
  3. 03"You mentioned what you've put in so far. Did that include your employer's deposits? Those count toward the same limit."

Where to place it on your site

  • Turning 65 and Medicare enrollment pages

HSA holders near Medicare need the contribution rule explained before they enroll.

  • Year-end and tax-season content

Limit searches rise as people try to max out before December or the filing deadline.

  • Benefits enrollment resources

Employees setting payroll deductions want the exact amount that keeps them within the limit.

Why would an insurance agency publish an HSA contribution calculator?

Because the people searching for HSA limits are HDHP enrollees, and some of them are approaching Medicare age. Medicare brokers, individual health agents and benefits brokers all serve that audience. The calculator answers a narrow question quickly, earns trust, and its age input identifies prospects who are about to make a Medicare enrollment decision.

Contribution-limit searches spike near year-end and the tax filing deadline, giving the page a seasonal role that complements open enrollment and AEP content.

For Medicare brokers it is a respectful entry point: the visitor is not shopping for a plan, they are trying to stay within IRS rules, and your follow-up can help them coordinate the two.

Which IRS rules does the calculator apply?

It uses the 2026 base limits — $4,400 self-only and $8,750 family coverage under IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19 — adds the $1,000 catch-up for account holders 55 or older per IRS Publication 969, subtracts amounts already contributed including employer deposits, and spreads the remainder over the months left, which can run to the filing deadline.

Some rules sit outside the arithmetic and are explained in the Definitions block instead: proration for partial-year eligibility, the last-month rule and its testing period, the separate catch-up each spouse needs in their own account, and the end of contributions once someone enrolls in Medicare.

The Medicare point deserves care. Part A enrollment can be retroactive when someone applies after first becoming eligible, which can turn recent contributions into excess contributions. Point prospects to IRS Publication 969 (opens in a new tab) and a tax professional for their situation.

What follow-up works best for HSA limit leads?

Segment by age. Prospects under 55 get contribution and plan-choice content; those 55 to 62 get catch-up and pre-retirement planning; those 63 and older get Medicare-timing education and an invitation to talk before enrolling. Keep Medicare follow-up educational and plan-neutral, and collect scope-of-appointment where CMS rules require it before discussing specific plans.

Send the age and coverage tier in the webhook to HighLevel or your CRM and branch on them. A short sequence that explains why HSA contributions stop at Medicare enrollment, with an offer to review timing, is useful to the client and aligned with what they came for.

  • Under 55: plan comparison at enrollment
  • 55–62: catch-up reminder before the filing deadline
  • 63+: Medicare and HSA timing education, then appointment offer
  • Family coverage: dependant and life-coverage review

HSA contribution limit

Terms the widget explains

HSA contribution limit
The most that can go into a Health Savings Account for one tax year, counting your deposits and your employer’s together. For 2026 the limit is $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19). This calculator starts from that base limit, adds any catch-up, and subtracts what is already in.
Health Savings Account (HSA)
A tax-advantaged account paired with a high-deductible health plan. Contributions are tax-deductible or made pre-tax through payroll, growth is not taxed, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused money rolls over from year to year and stays with you if you change jobs or health plans.
High-deductible health plan (HDHP)
A health plan with a higher deductible and out-of-pocket structure that meets IRS requirements, which is what makes you eligible to contribute to an HSA. The IRS sets the minimum deductible and maximum out-of-pocket amounts each year. Whether your HDHP covers only you or your family determines which base limit this calculator uses.
Self-only vs. family coverage
The coverage tier of your HDHP. Self-only covers just the account holder; family covers the holder plus at least one other person. The tier sets your base limit — $4,400 self-only or $8,750 family for 2026 (IRS). If coverage changes mid-year, the limit is generally figured month by month for each tier.
Catch-up contribution (55+)
An extra amount account holders can add once they are 55 or older by the end of the tax year: $1,000, fixed by statute (IRS Pub. 969, applies for 2026). It is added on top of the base limit. If both spouses are 55+, each needs their own HSA to make a catch-up; it cannot be doubled in one account.
Employer contributions
Money your employer deposits into your HSA, including amounts routed through a cafeteria plan. They count toward the same annual limit as your own deposits, so this calculator treats them as already contributed. Leaving them out is a common way to overshoot the limit and end up with an excess contribution to correct.
Prorated limit
When you are HSA-eligible for only part of the year, the limit is generally reduced to the months you had HDHP coverage — for example, 6 eligible months allows about half the annual amount. An exception, the last-month rule, can allow the full limit but requires staying eligible through a testing period afterward.
Medicare enrollment
Once you enroll in any part of Medicare, you can no longer contribute to an HSA; your limit drops to $0 from that month on. You can still spend the existing balance on qualified expenses. Medicare Part A enrollment can be backdated when you apply after becoming eligible, which may make recent contributions excess.
Contribution deadline
Contributions for a tax year can be made up to that year’s federal filing deadline, usually in April of the following year, without extensions. That is why this calculator lets you spread the remaining amount over the months left, which may run past December. Designate prior-year deposits with your HSA custodian.

Compliance notes for this line

  • HSA limits and eligibility come from the IRS and change yearly. The figures shown apply to 2026 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19; Publication 969); confirm current-year figures before quoting them in other materials.
  • Do not give tax advice. The result is an estimate; proration, the last-month rule and Medicare retroactivity can change a person's actual limit.
  • Medicare follow-up must respect CMS marketing rules, including scope-of-appointment requirements before discussing Medicare Advantage or Part D plans.
  • Capture TCPA-appropriate consent on the form before calling or texting leads.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Answers first, details after.

What limits does the calculator use?

The 2026 IRS limits: $4,400 for self-only and $8,750 for family HDHP coverage (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19), plus a $1,000 catch-up for account holders 55 or older (IRS Publication 969). Limits change each year, so check the current figures before relying on them.

Why is a contribution calculator useful for Medicare brokers?

Because the age field identifies HSA holders approaching Medicare. Enrolling in any part of Medicare ends HSA contribution eligibility, and many people do not know that. Explaining it builds trust before the Medicare enrollment conversation.

Does the calculator handle partial-year eligibility?

It calculates the full-year limit. The Definitions block explains proration for partial-year HDHP coverage and the last-month rule, so visitors know their actual limit may be lower and when to check with a tax professional.

Do employer contributions count?

Yes. The already-contributed field asks for both personal and employer deposits, because both count toward the same limit. Leaving employer money out is a common cause of excess contributions.

Can both spouses use one catch-up in a single HSA?

No. Each spouse who is 55 or older needs their own HSA to make a catch-up contribution, as the calculator's definitions explain. That detail often prompts a household-level conversation.

Why can the months left run past December?

Contributions for a tax year can be made until that year's federal filing deadline, usually in April. The calculator lets visitors spread the remaining amount over the months they actually have.

Is it appropriate to follow up with Medicare plan offers?

Follow up with education first. Discussing specific Medicare Advantage or Part D plans requires following CMS rules, including scope of appointment. Our article on Medicare and ACA season calculators covers the cautions.

What does the lead include?

Coverage tier, age, amount already contributed and months left, plus the results: maximum contribution, base limit, catch-up, remaining amount and monthly amount to reach the maximum. Attribution data such as UTM tags and click IDs comes along.

Which plan includes this calculator?

It is part of the insurance calculator set on the Enterprise plan, at $210 a month. See pricing for details.
