Income protection · long-term care

A long-term care cost calculator that dates the decision

The visitor enters today's annual care cost, a care inflation rate, years until care, expected duration and the savings they have set aside. You receive the projected future cost and the funding gap in future dollars.

A long-term care cost calculator projects what care would cost when it is likely needed, compounds that cost through the years of care, and compares the total with savings set aside. Agencies embed it because care planning is easy to postpone; a funding gap with a date attached gives the prospect a reason to book a conversation.

What the inputs tell you before the call

InputsWhat it tells your producer
Years Until Care NeededApproximates age and urgency. A short horizon suggests a prospect in their late sixties or caring for a parent; a long one points to a younger planner.
Current Annual Care CostShows which setting they are picturing — home care, assisted living or a nursing home — and whether they researched local prices.
Savings Set AsideIndicates whether the conversation is about self-funding with protection, a hybrid life or annuity product, or traditional LTC coverage.
Expected Care Duration (years)A long duration often reflects family history, such as a parent with dementia, which is worth asking about gently.
Care Cost Inflation (%)Prospects who raise it are worried about rising costs; inflation protection riders will resonate.

Your first call

How should a producer open a long-term care call?

These leads often come from someone who has watched a parent need care. Lead with their timeline and their savings, ask about family experience, and avoid any suggestion that coverage is guaranteed or that rates are locked.

  1. 01"You planned for care about twenty years from now and set aside a meaningful amount. Would you want that money protected for your family, or available for your own care first?"
  2. 02"You picked a care cost close to assisted living prices in our area. Is that the setting you would prefer, or were you thinking about staying at home?"
  3. 03"A lot of people run this after helping a parent through care. Is that part of what prompted you?"

Where to place it on your site

  • Medicare and retirement planning pages

Pre-retirees asking what Medicare covers are exactly the audience whose gap is real and near.

  • Annuity product pages

Visitors weighing where to put savings can see what care could consume and ask about care-rider options.

  • Adult children and caregiver content

People helping a parent often run the numbers for themselves next.

  • Seminar and workshop follow-up emails

A personal projection keeps attendees engaged after the event and identifies who wants a private meeting.

Which agencies benefit from a long-term care calculator?

Life and health agencies, Medicare brokers, annuity specialists and financial-services practices that serve pre-retirees. Long-term care touches every one of those books, yet few prospects raise it unprompted. A calculator on a retirement or Medicare page lets them look at the number privately and arrive with a projected gap and a time horizon already defined.

Medicare brokers in particular field the same question every season: does Medicare cover long-term care? The calculator's Definitions block explains that health insurance and Medicare typically cover little long-term custodial care, which reinforces your message without crossing into plan marketing.

Annuity and life producers can use the funding gap to introduce hybrid life or annuity products with care riders, where state-approved and appropriate for the client.

How does the calculator project care costs, and where is it conservative?

It grows today's annual care cost at the care inflation rate until care begins, then inflates each further year of care and sums the total. It subtracts savings set aside without growing them. That makes the gap conservative if savings stay invested, and it ignores insurance benefits and public programs, which the producer should introduce.

Because the figures are stated in future dollars, the totals can look large. That is the honest result of compounding, and the Definitions block says so. Producers should translate the gap back into terms such as a monthly benefit or a pool of money when presenting options.

If the prospect left inflation at the default, ask whether they know local prices. Care costs vary widely by state and setting, so a quick check of the starting figure keeps the conversation credible.

Why do state rules matter so much for long-term care leads?

Long-term care insurance is regulated state by state, including product approvals, rate increase reviews and Long-Term Care Partnership programs that let qualifying policyholders protect assets under Medicaid. Partnership availability, rules and reciprocity vary by state, so producers should confirm the prospect's state of residence and its current program details before discussing any asset-protection benefits.

Many states also require specific LTC training and continuing education before a producer can sell long-term care coverage, including Partnership-qualified policies. Make sure the person who calls the lead meets those requirements in the prospect's state.

Long-term care cost

Terms the widget explains

Long-term care
Ongoing help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating or moving around, needed because of chronic illness, disability or cognitive decline. It can be provided at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home. Costs vary widely by location and setting, which is why this calculator starts from your own estimate of today’s annual cost.
Care cost inflation
The yearly rate at which long-term care prices rise. Historically it has run faster than general inflation, largely because care is labor-intensive. The calculator compounds today’s cost at this rate until care begins and through each year of care, so small changes in the rate produce large changes over long horizons.
Future annual cost
What one year of care is projected to cost in the year care begins, found by growing today’s annual cost at the care inflation rate for the years until care is needed. For example, $60,000 growing at 4% for 25 years reaches roughly $160,000. It is a projection, not a quote from any provider.
Total future care cost
The sum of projected annual costs across every year of care, with each year inflated further than the last. It is the total amount you would need to pay for the full expected duration of care, before counting savings, insurance benefits or public programs. It is stated in future dollars, not today’s dollars.
Funding gap
The total future care cost minus the savings you have set aside. It shows how much would still need to come from other sources, such as income, insurance, family help or public programs. This calculator does not grow your savings with investment returns, so the gap is conservative if the money stays invested.
Care duration
The number of years you expect to need paid care. This calculator’s own guidance puts the U.S. average at around three years, but individual needs range from a few months to many years. Because total cost scales almost directly with duration, testing a longer period is a sensible way to see the downside.
Assisted living
A residential setting that provides housing, meals and help with daily activities, with less medical care than a nursing home. It usually costs less than nursing-home care and more than occasional home care. Enter the annual cost of the setting you expect, since the calculator uses a single cost level for every year of care.
Nursing home
A facility that provides round-the-clock skilled nursing care, supervision and help with daily activities. It is generally the most expensive long-term care setting. Health insurance and Medicare typically cover little or no long-term custodial care, so these costs are usually paid from savings, long-term care insurance or, after assets are spent down, Medicaid.
Long-term care insurance
A policy that pays a set daily or monthly benefit toward care once you can no longer perform certain daily activities, usually after a waiting period. Premiums rise with age at purchase. This calculator does not include insurance benefits, so any expected coverage would reduce the funding gap it shows.

Compliance notes for this line

  • Long-Term Care Partnership programs, their asset-protection rules and reciprocity vary by state. Confirm the current program in the prospect's state before mentioning it.
  • Many states require LTC-specific producer training and ongoing continuing education; only trained, licensed producers should handle these leads.
  • Projected costs are estimates in future dollars, not prices from any provider and not quotes for coverage. Never imply premiums cannot rise; most LTC premiums are not guaranteed.
  • On Medicare-related pages, keep the calculator educational and plan-neutral and follow CMS marketing rules for any Medicare Advantage or Part D content around it.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Answers first, details after.

Why would a long-term care calculator convert better than a contact form?

Care planning is easy to postpone. A projected cost tied to a specific year makes it concrete, and visitors who submit after seeing a gap have already accepted the premise. The lead also tells the producer the horizon, setting and savings before the first call.

Does the calculator include long-term care insurance benefits?

No. It projects costs and compares them with savings only. Any insurance benefit, hybrid product or public program would reduce the funding gap, which is exactly what the producer discusses next.

Why are the results so large?

They are in future dollars. Care costs are compounded at the care inflation rate until care starts and through every year of care. The Definitions block explains this, and producers can reframe the gap in today's dollars during the call.

Can Medicare brokers use this without breaking CMS marketing rules?

The calculator is educational and plan-neutral; it does not name or compare Medicare plans. Pages around it that market Medicare Advantage or Part D still need to follow CMS guidance. Our post on Medicare and ACA season calculators covers the cautions.

Should we mention the Long-Term Care Partnership program on the page?

Only carefully and in general terms. Partnership programs differ by state in rules and reciprocity, so page copy should tell visitors that rules vary and that a licensed producer can explain what applies where they live.

What age group uses this calculator most effectively?

People roughly a decade or two from retirement, and adult children helping parents. The years-until-care input reveals which group you are calling, so the producer can adjust both tone and product direction.

Does the savings figure assume investment growth?

No. Savings are subtracted at face value, so the funding gap is conservative if the money stays invested. Producers can use that to open a conversation about how earmarked savings are currently held.

Can we customize the care cost default for our state?

Visitors enter their own current annual care cost, so the projection reflects the setting and location they expect. Your page copy can point them to local cost information before they start.

Which plan includes the long-term care calculator?

It is part of the insurance calculator set on the Enterprise plan, at $210 a month today. Full plan details are on pricing.
