An HSA savings calculator for brokers that plays the long game

The visitor enters their current balance, their own and their employer's yearly contributions, years to grow and an expected return. You receive the projected HSA value and a clear picture of how they use the account today.

An HSA savings calculator projects how a Health Savings Account could grow when contributions are invested over years rather than spent each year. Health agents and benefits brokers embed it because it reframes a high-deductible plan as a long-term savings decision, and the lead shows balance, contribution habits and employer funding before the enrollment or retirement conversation.

What the inputs tell you before the call

InputsWhat it tells your producer
Current HSA BalanceShows whether the account is new or established. A large balance often means a disciplined saver who may already be thinking about retirement health costs.
Your Annual ContributionContribution habits reveal whether the prospect treats the HSA as a spending account or an investment account.
Employer Annual ContributionA non-zero entry confirms group HDHP coverage and points to an employer you may already work with or could approach.
Years to GrowApproximates age and time to retirement, which shapes whether to discuss Medicare transitions, annuities or long-term care.
Annual Return (%)A high assumed return shows an investment-minded prospect; a low one suggests the money sits in cash.

Your first call

How do you start a conversation from an HSA growth lead?

These prospects are planners. Acknowledge the habits their inputs show, keep tax and investment statements general, and connect the account to coverage decisions you can actually help with: plan choice, Medicare timing and care costs.

  1. 01"You projected about twenty-five years of growth. Have you thought about how HSA contributions stop once you enroll in Medicare?"
  2. 02"Your employer adds money every year. When your plan options come up at renewal, would it help to compare the high-deductible plan against the alternatives with your own numbers?"
  3. 03"You're contributing well beyond what you spend each year. Are you planning to use the account for health costs in retirement?"

Where to place it on your site

  • Open enrollment and HDHP explainer pages

Employees deciding whether to choose an HSA-eligible plan want to see the long-term upside.

  • Benefits broker client portals and enrollment emails

Gives employer clients an engagement tool and gives you insight into which employees are planners.

  • Turning 65 and Medicare planning content

HSA holders nearing Medicare need to understand when contributions must stop.

Which agencies get value from an HSA savings calculator?

Individual health agents, employee benefits brokers and Medicare-focused agencies. Benefits brokers can use it in enrollment communications to show employees why HDHP and HSA elections matter. Medicare brokers can attract people in their fifties and early sixties who are building HSA balances and will soon face Medicare enrollment, which ends their eligibility to contribute.

For benefits brokers, the calculator supports education without plan-specific promises. Employees see compounding over a career, and the lead tells you which employers' staff are engaged, which is useful at renewal time.

For Medicare brokers, an HSA saver turning 65 is a high-value relationship: they need help coordinating Medicare enrollment with HSA contributions, and they have savings that may raise annuity or long-term care questions.

How does the calculator project HSA growth?

It grows the starting balance at the assumed annual return and adds each year's combined personal and employer contributions at year-end, letting them compound for the remaining years. It shows future value, total contributions and total growth. It assumes no withdrawals, a constant return and no fees, so it illustrates potential rather than predicting a balance.

The contribution field reminds visitors of the IRS limit: for 2026 the combined personal and employer contribution limit is $4,400 for self-only and $8,750 for family coverage, plus a $1,000 catch-up at 55 or older (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19; IRS Publication 969).

Tax-free treatment depends on spending the money on qualified medical expenses, which the Definitions block explains. Refer specific tax questions to a tax professional and to IRS Publication 969 (opens in a new tab).

Where does an HSA lead go after the first conversation?

HSA savers are often a few steps from several decisions an agency can help with: choosing between an HDHP and a traditional plan at enrollment, maximizing this year's contribution, timing Medicare enrollment, and planning for long-term care. Following up with the matching calculator keeps each step useful to the client rather than a sales push.

Tag leads by years to grow. Long horizons get enrollment and contribution content; short horizons get Medicare-transition and long-term care content. Confirm your TCPA consent covers the channels you use for each sequence.

HSA growth

Terms the widget explains

Health Savings Account (HSA)
A tax-advantaged account paired with a high-deductible health plan. Contributions are tax-deductible or made pre-tax through payroll, investment growth is not taxed, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused money rolls over every year, which is why this calculator can treat it as a long-term investment account.
Future HSA value
The projected balance at the end of the years you enter: the starting balance grown at your annual return, plus each year’s contributions grown for the years remaining. It is a nominal figure, not adjusted for inflation, and assumes no withdrawals along the way. Actual balances depend on markets, fees and spending.
Annual contribution
What you deposit into the HSA each year. Your and your employer’s contributions together cannot exceed the IRS limit — for 2026, $4,400 self-only or $8,750 family, plus $1,000 at age 55+ (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19; Pub. 969). This calculator assumes each year’s contribution is made and invested at year-end.
Employer contribution
Money your employer puts into your HSA each year. It grows the same way as your own deposits and is not taxed as income to you, but it counts toward the same annual limit. This calculator adds it to your contribution to get the total annual contribution invested each year.
Annual return
The average yearly growth rate you assume on the invested balance. Many HSAs hold part of the balance in cash and let you invest the rest in funds; cash earns less. This calculator applies one constant rate every year, while real returns vary, can be negative, and are reduced by account and fund fees.
Total growth
The part of the future value that comes from investment returns rather than deposits: future value minus the starting balance and all contributions. Because returns compound, growth accelerates in later years, so the years-to-grow input usually moves this number more than a modest change in the contribution does.
Compound growth
Earning returns on previous returns as well as on the money you deposited. At 6% a year, $10,000 becomes about $10,600 after one year and about $32,070 after 20 years. Inside an HSA, compounding is not reduced by yearly taxes on dividends or gains, which is the main advantage over a taxable account.
Qualified medical expenses
Health costs the IRS allows you to pay from an HSA tax-free, such as deductibles, copays, prescriptions, dental and vision care. Money withdrawn for other purposes is taxable and can also carry an additional penalty depending on your age. The tax-free outcome this calculator implies depends on spending the balance on qualified expenses.

Compliance notes for this line

  • HSA eligibility, limits and tax treatment are set by the IRS (see Publication 969). Keep statements general and refer tax questions to a tax professional.
  • Avoid investment recommendations about HSA funds unless the producer holds the appropriate securities registration; the calculator's return is the visitor's own assumption.
  • Benefits brokers should check employer client agreements and ERISA plan communication rules before placing tools in enrollment materials.
  • Capture TCPA-appropriate consent on the lead form before automated calls or marketing texts.

FAQ

Questions agencies ask

Answers first, details after.

Why would a health agency want an HSA growth calculator rather than a plan comparison?

They serve different moments. A comparison helps with this year's plan choice; the growth calculator speaks to long-term planners. Offering both catches more prospects, and the HSA vs traditional plan calculator covers the comparison side.

Does the calculator include the IRS contribution limits?

The contribution field states the 2026 limits so visitors stay realistic: $4,400 self-only and $8,750 family, plus $1,000 at age 55 or older (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19; Publication 969). It projects whatever amount the visitor enters.

Does it account for withdrawals for medical expenses?

No. It assumes the balance stays invested with no withdrawals, which shows the account's long-term potential. Real balances will be lower if the visitor spends from the account along the way.

Are fees or cash balances modeled?

No. The calculator applies one constant return. The Definitions block notes that many HSAs hold part of the balance in cash and that fees reduce growth, so visitors understand the limitation.

Can benefits brokers use this in employee communications?

Yes, subject to your employer clients' approval and plan communication rules. Embed it on a benefits page or link it in enrollment emails. Leads show employer contributions, which helps you see which client groups are engaged.

What does an employer contribution in the lead tell us?

That the prospect is on an employer HDHP and the employer funds the HSA. It also tells you the employer is a potential benefits relationship if you do not already serve it.

Can we discuss HSA investment options with leads?

Only within your licensing. Recommending specific investments may require a securities registration. Insurance producers can focus on coverage decisions, contribution limits and Medicare timing, and refer investment questions.

Which plan includes the HSA calculators?

All three HSA calculators are insurance calculators on the Enterprise plan, currently $210 per month. See pricing for yearly billing.
