Health insurance & HSAs
A high-deductible health plan (HDHP) is health coverage that meets IRS minimum-deductible and maximum out-of-pocket thresholds, which makes the enrollee eligible to open and fund a health savings account. HDHPs usually carry lower premiums than traditional plans in exchange for paying more before coverage begins.
Whether an HDHP saves money depends on expected usage, the employer's HSA contribution and the enrollee's tax bracket. A healthy single employee and a family managing a chronic condition can reach opposite answers from the same plan menu.
The HSA versus traditional plan calculator asks for both plans' premiums and deductibles, Expected Medical Costs, contributions and Marginal Tax Rate (%), then names the Lower-Cost Plan. A benefits broker who receives that lead can see exactly which assumption tipped the result.
