Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional travel insurance upgrade that reimburses part of a trip's prepaid, nonrefundable costs if the traveler cancels for a reason the base policy does not cover. It costs extra, must usually be bought soon after the first trip payment, and often requires cancelling a set number of days before departure.
CFAR typically reimburses a percentage of the insured cost rather than the full amount, and eligibility rules are strict: the whole trip cost usually has to be insured and the timing deadlines met. Travelers who skip the fine print often discover they no longer qualify by the time they want it.
A travel insurance calculator is built and awaiting release. Agencies that offer travel coverage can use the eventual lead fields, trip cost and departure date, to judge quickly whether CFAR is still available to the prospect.
