Medicare-age planning

Medigap

Medigap, or Medicare Supplement insurance, is a private policy that helps pay costs Original Medicare leaves behind, such as deductibles and coinsurance. Plans are standardized by letter, so a given plan letter offers the same benefits from every insurer in most states, and only price and service differ.

Timing is everything with Medigap. The federal six-month Medigap open enrollment period begins the month a person is 65 or older and enrolled in Part B; during it, insurers generally cannot use medical underwriting. Outside it, applicants in many states can be declined or charged more, though some states give broader rights.

Medigap is a supplement to Original Medicare, not to Medicare Advantage, and the two cannot be used together. Because Medigap policies are not Part C or Part D plans, some CMS marketing rules apply differently, and agents should confirm their own state and carrier requirements.
