Disability & long-term care

Activities of daily living

Activities of daily living (ADLs) are basic self-care tasks used to trigger long-term care benefits: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, continence and transferring in and out of a bed or chair. Needing substantial help with a set number of them, or having a severe cognitive impairment, is what usually starts a long-term care claim.

For tax-qualified long-term care policies, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 set the benefit trigger as being unable to perform at least two of six ADLs for an expected 90 days, or needing substantial supervision because of severe cognitive impairment. Hybrid life and annuity products with care riders often borrow similar triggers.

When a visitor uses the long-term care calculator, they are usually picturing a parent or themselves losing exactly these abilities. Knowing the trigger language lets a producer explain when coverage would actually begin to pay, which is the question most prospects are too embarrassed to ask.
