Disability & long-term care

Benefit period

The benefit period is the maximum length of time a disability or long-term care policy will keep paying once a claim is approved, for example two years, five years or to a stated age such as 65. Longer benefit periods cost more but protect against the disabilities and care episodes that cause the largest losses.

Short benefit periods look affordable and cover most claims, which is exactly why they can mislead. The claims that break a household budget are the long ones, so the benefit period is often more important than the monthly benefit amount when the goal is protecting a career's worth of income.

In long-term care planning the equivalent input is how long care might last. The long-term care calculator asks for Expected Care Duration (years) and multiplies it by an inflated Future Annual Cost, so the lead shows the duration the prospect is worried about.
