Disability & long-term care
The elimination period is the waiting time between the start of a disability or care need and the first day benefits are payable. Disability policies commonly use periods such as 30, 90 or 180 days, and long-term care policies use a similar wait. A longer elimination period lowers the premium but requires more savings to bridge the gap.
The elimination period is effectively a deductible measured in time. Choosing it well means knowing how many months of essential expenses a household can cover from savings or sick pay, and most prospects have never done that math before a producer asks.
The disability insurance calculator defines the term in its Definitions block and asks for Monthly Essential Expenses, which gives the producer the figure needed to suggest how long a waiting period the client can realistically carry.
